SAGINAW * A COOL CITY?
Dear Editor; The Governor hails Saginaw as a "cool city". It can be, however it presents many challenges before Saginaw can claim that label. Recently a Saginaw native, P.K., wrote into the Review suggesting that Saginaw is a "cool city" because of its music scene and said Saginaw is not so bad.
I agree the music scene is great, however
is that the only standard Saginaw is to be judged by? Saginaw has a
great diversity in culture, entertainment, clubs, and music. Saginaw
schools have excellent athletic programs that we all can enjoy. There
are activities for young and old alike. Saginaw's business owners and
residents are to be commended for their quick and generous response for
money, aid and volunteers for the hurricane victims in the Gulf states.
Saginaw people have a good heart and a great spirit and have always
risen to the occasion for MDA and local and national disasters.
However, there is a reason Saginaw is
known as Sagnasty. In a city where there are senseless killings,
gang violence, a dwindling police force, a do-nothing city council,
embezzlement at City Hall, and a crumbling infrastructure, there is a
lot of work to do.
I think Saginaw has to be held to a
higher standard than "not so bad". P.K. says stop complaining about
Saginaw and change your attitude about life. I would agree, however when
you hear someone say "Saginaw Sucks", instead of telling them to "hit
the road, Jack" as P.K. suggests, tell them something real "cool" - like
get involved, make a difference and Saginaw can become truly the "cool
city" we all envision.
