                           QUICK QUIZ

Who is the only player to quarterback a team in a Rose Bowl, a Grey Cup and a Super Bowl?

A.  Joe Kapp
B.  Joe Theisman
C.  Doug Flutie
D.  Tom Harshman

QUOTABLE QUOTES

Former Miami Dolphins fullback Larry Csonka, on the 6-6, 285-pound Gordon King,  "It's good to have a lineman you can look straight in the belly button."
                                  *
Sportswriter Bob Rubin,  "To be manager of the New York Yankees under the malevolent dictatorship of George Steinbrenner is like being married to Zsa Zsa Gabor. The union is short and sweet."

                                        *
NBA referee Earl Strom, "Officiating is the only occupation in the world where the highest accolade is silence."

IDLE THOUGHTS

Don't get all excited about the Detroit Tigers just because they've won a batch of games. Sure, the Bengals may have improved their offense with the addition of cleanup hitter Magglio Ordonez, and they've even bolstered their bullpen by adding a couple of arms. But it still boils down to starting pitching. They've got one hurler (Jeremy Bonderman) they can count on . . . and you need at least three good starting pitchers if you're going to make some noise. I figure a second place finish will suit them just fine.

I do look for a breakout season from Tiger first baseman Carlos Pena. He finally realizes that the first base job is his, so there's no need to look over your shoulder. Look for Pena to be the Tigers' representative in this year's All-Star game.

Look for Michigan State University's men's basketball team to win the Big 10 title next season. The Spartans - who return the solid trio of Paul Davis, Shannon Brown and Maurice Ager - may be better than they were this season. Add point guard Drew Neitzel, who seemed to get better as the season progressed, into the mix and you've got the ingredients of a very good team. Matt Trannon, an above average wide receiver, should nix plans of playing professional football.

How would you like to have been
Saginaw High's varsity football coach this past season? Playing for the Trojans were Jamar Hibler, Jamaal Hibler, Jamir Grady and Jermain Jenkins. It's any wonder he didn't get tongue-tied while calling plays.

Wayne Gretzky
is arguably the best hockey player who ever played the game. But a closer look at his overall numbers proves otherwise. But after leaving Edmonton, where he was surrounded by a number of Hall of Famers in their prime, over the final 11 years of his career he was a net minus. That's right, from 1988-99 when Gretzky was on the ice at even strength, the Great One's teams were outscored by 33 goals. In his last eight seasons, he was a pitiful minus-86.
