2nd System -
Best Rock Band of the Year
``````````````````````````````````````````````````````
 by Randy Chandler
The members of the 2nd System were about to head for the door. Nominated in numerous categories, they had watched as others gobbled up the trophies that were handed out in their divisions: Best songwriter and male vocalist (Pat Brennan); Best bassist (Sean Haller), Best original band, Best website - only the award for Best Rock band, the big one, remained.
Guitarist Derrick Fisher was sure it would be a total shutout. "Dan Ballard (Shooter's Manager) was giving out the awards for that division, and he was sort of peeking at the winners of the next round of awards. On his way up to the stage for the final round, he stopped me and said, "I want you to know that I think you guys are the best."
"I took it as a consolation, that he knew we didn't win, and wanted to soften the blow or something."
When it was announced that T2S had indeed won Best Rock Band, the triumph was Ballard's. "Ha!" he bellowed, "I GOT YA!!"
It has been an interesting and busy year for T2S. After parting ways with founding drummer Jack Masters, the group solidified its lineup with the addition of former Tension Head wunderkind Tyler Johnson.
March finally saw the release of their latest disc, 'Karma Chanics', which had been in the works since October 2003.The disc, recorded at HIGH Concept Studios and mixed by the band themselves, captures the group's "nu-Goth" sound (my assessment, not theirs, I should point out) and features set opener "Change of Heart", fan favorites "No One, "Unscene" and "Anxious Intuition", their ode to masturbation,
Perhaps the most unique song on the CD is "Wood and Wires" (complete with what may be the first instance of a vibrator appearing on a Saginaw band's disc), and a special appearance by Kindred's Trish Chandler (Best female rock vocalist nominee) on the moody "A.N.S.W.E.R.".
The band is currently going through it's second pressing of the CD - the initial pressings have already sold out.
 Sessions will soon begin for their next full-length release, the first to feature Johnson (although he does appear on Karma Chanics bonus track, an intense reworking of Pink Floyd's  "Comfortably Numb", which was recorded in February of this year).
T2S are currently waging an online battle of the bands at ernieball.com to perform on the local stage at this year's Warped Tour. An East coast tour, with AFM Entertainment stable mates Crossbreed, is currently in negotiations.
"When the nominees were announced," Fisher offers, "We were stunned. We've been together five years now and have never been nominated for any REVIEW awards. Suddenly, we're in all these different categories! We've been gigging regularly, building a following, and it looked like it was gonna be our year...To get best Rock Band was a very cool thing, and I just want the fans to know, and all the people who voted for us, for whatever reason, we really appreciate it. Thank you."
Vocalist Pat Brennan expressed his feelings in song as he accepted the award, leading the end-of-the-night crowd in a rousing rendition of "Row Row Row Your Boat".
"Since I didn't get the male vocalist award, I wanted a chance to sing for you all," smiled Brennan.
