Two Blues Legends Appear
at White's Bar September 9 & 10
Mark Hummel is
a harmonica virtuoso that has been called "one of a handful of the best players
ever on the instrument" by Blues Revue magazine. Based out of
California, Hummel will be performing at Whites on Thursday, September
9th at a CD Release Party.
Leader of The Blues Survivors, Hummel has been a major force in shaping
and defining this musical genre. A true 'road warrior', Hummel has crafted his
own trademark harmonica sound - a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and
attack combined with a strong sense of swing. The
following night, on Saturday, September 10th, Whites will host an
appearance by Louisiana Red. One of the few legends of the Blues still
alive that was active during the formative years of blues music, 'Red' was born
in the Deep South in 1932. Strongly influenced by Muddy Waters, Lightnin'
Hopkins and Arthur Crudup, this guitarist/vocalist was able to meld these
influences and discover his 'own' voice, style, and form of expression. When
Red performs the songs are often only launching pads for expressing his
immediate feelings in an almost lost tradition of spontaneous composition that
goes back to the original Delta Blues artists, and even further to West-African
griot bands. In a
career spanning over half a century, Louisiana Red has played with just
about every major bluesman you can name, with some of his most memorable
encounters beings jams with B.B. King and Muddy Waters. The tri-cities are lucky to have two stellar back-to-back performances all on the same weekend, so be sure to note these dates on your calendar.
