                              QUICK QUIZ

Who is the only National Basketball Association player to win the MVP award two consecutive years while playing for a different team each year?

A.  Moses Malone
B.  Julius Erving
C.  Earl Monroe
D.  Craig Dill

QUOTABLE QUOTES

Former Illinois football coach Bob Zuppke,  "No athletic director holds office longer than two unsuccessful football coaches."

*

Professional golfer Lee Trevino, "My wife doesn't care what I do when I'm away as long as I don't have a good time."

*

Former broadcaster Howard Cosell,  "Sports is the toy department of human life."

IDLE THOUGHTS

It's finally official. Joe Vogl, interim athletic director at Saginaw Valley State University, was officially named the school's athletic director. The Bay City resident, who formerly coached the school's golf program for 13 years (winning two league titles and three league Coach of the Year awards), was the logical choice to replace Griz Zimmerman. Zimmerman, a former University of Michigan gridiron standout, accepted an AD job at Gannon University back in December. The hard-working Vogl, a prep standout in Owosso, was the main point man when the Detroit Lions were in town for training camp.

Well, well, well . . . what are we going to do with our Detroit Dead Wings? The team has often been called one of the greatest teams ever because of all the future Hall of Famers in the lineup. I wholeheartedly disagree. You can't call them one of the greatest when they haven't won any Cups. Look for Brendan Shanahan to take a nice, fat pay cut. Wouldn't it be nice if they had a roster full of Kris Drapers on the team?

I see where Bay City Western recently added 80,000 pounds of shredded automobile tires into the grass on its football field. The Warriors became the first school in the area to go to the 'crumb rubber' surface, similar to Ford Field in Detroit. In fact, the Ford Motor Co. and Hagen Ford of Bay City donated the ground-up tires. The material is excellent for drainage and the surface won't produce as much mud as regular fields. It should also help reduce the number of injuries.

My Dad commented to me the other day on why the United State Postal Service is sponsoring cyclist Lance Armstrong. I understand Armstrong works for the post office, but I question how they can use taxpayers money to sponsor his races? So when are stamps going up again?

Ah, election season is right around the corner. Typically, professional athletes are known as level-headed. Why on earth would then want to enter the fray of politics? My top five politician/athlete combo:
5. Jesse Ventura
4. Jim Bunning
3. J.C. Watts
2 Jack Kemp
1. Bill Bradley

Virtually Perfect Golf is a teaching devise developed by a Toronto company that allows a golfer to actually imitate a perfect swing. What the computer-generated model does is help 'muscle memory'.  A golfer attaches a battery pack to the waist and wears a pair of 3D glasses. In the glasses the golfer steps into the computer-generated model, which is adjusted based upon the golfer's size. The model will make the ideal golf swing and the golfer mimics it. King Par in Flint, one of only four locations in the United State to offer the system, offers a one-hour lesson for $89.

I follow local high school sports about as close as anyone. I don't think I've seen as many athletes playing two sports in the same season as this school year. Most dual-sport athletes come in the spring where an athlete will run track and play baseball at the same time. Girls will run track and play either softball or soccer. This past winter saw a rarity . . . a Carrollton High School athlete played basketball and wrestled in the same season.
