QUICK QUIZ Who was the first National Hockey League goaltender to regularly wear a mask when he played? A. Gump Worsley B. Jacques Plante C. Terry Sawchuck D. Greg 'Chico' Turner QUOTABLE QUOTES Mark Snow, New Mexico basketball player, "Strength is my biggest weakness." * Former Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, "When I was 40, my doctor advised me that a man in his 40s shouldn't play tennis. I heeded his advice carefully and could hardly wait until I reached 50 to start again." * Critic John Crosby, on radio announcer Bill Stern, "He made every touchdown an epic feat of arms." IDLE THOUGHTS The Tri-Valley Conference West Division has got to be one of the toughest girls softball conferences in the state. In the pre-season poll, Freeland was ranked No. 1, Hemlock No. 5, and Swan Valley No. 10. * The Jimenez name has been synonymous to bowling in Saginaw County for several decades. The late Albert Jimenez Sr. started things out. Then his son, Joe Jimenez, got into the act. And now, Joe Jimenez Jr. is the next budding standout bowler. He recently rolled his first-ever 300 game, becoming the youngest bowler in the county to throw a 300-sanction game. He is 13 years old. His father tossed his first 300 game at 15-years-old. * Yes, I understand why the Saginaw Spirit let coach Mo Mantha go. No, I don't understand why the Saginaw Spirit let coach Mo Mantha go. Mantha, who lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and kids, did not want to relocate to the Tri-Cities. Owner Dick Garber, who is big on community activity for all of his employees, made it mandatory that Mantha move to the market when he coached. I thought the two parties could have worked something out. * Talks have resurfaced once again about the city of Bay City bringing a minor league baseball team to the city by the (Saginaw) bay. I think the Bay City Brewers has a nice ring to it. How about the Midland Street Marauders? * When Jim Harrick and his son Jim Harrick Jr. were fired from the University of Georgia as basketball coaches, it was uncovered that the younger Harrick awarded A's to three of his cagers despite missing class and failing to take the course's required test. The course, 'The Theory of Basketball,' had only three questions on the test: 1. How many halves are in a college basketball game? 2. How many quarters are in a high school game? 3. How many points do you get for a 3-point shot? Just where in the heck were the Harricks when I was attending Central Michigan University? * Did you know that John L. Smith, football coach at Michigan State University, has a larger salary than his counterpart at the University of Michigan, Lloyd Carr? Smith rakes in a $400,000 per year salary, compared to $303,000 for Carr. Heck, even Tom Izzo, the MSU cage coach, makes more than Carr ($320,000). Tommy Amaker, the Michigan basketball coach, makes only $154,500 . . . the same salary JoAnne McCallie of MSU receives. All right, you say, who the hell is JoAnne McCallie? She is the women's basketball coach for the Spartans. Red Berenson, the Michigan hockey coach, is next in line at $153,084. * Whatever happened to Dale Murphy? QUICK QUIZ ANSWER B. Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadians. |
