TIME OUT WITH TANY
THIS COLUMN WAS WRITTEN IN FRONT OF A LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE
QUICK QUIZ
When he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989, this player
became the first Little Leaguer ever awarded that honor.
A. Mike Schmidt
B. Carl Yastrzemski
C. Brooks Robinson
D. Chris Coman
QUOTABLE QUOTES
Comedian Bob Hope, on his induction into the Golf Hall of Fame, "It was a
great honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I didn't know they had a
caddie division."
o
Joe Dugan, an old-time infielder for the Philadelphia Phillies, discussing
the Philadelphia fans, "They had the worst fans in the world. They'd boo a
wake."
o
Bill Russell, former Boston Celtics center, "When I was growing up, my
mother wouldn't allow me to go near a golf course. She didn't think the
people who played were very nice. Now I play every day, and you know what?
She was right."
IDLE THOUGHTS
People that know me well know that I love rivalries. Doesn't matter what
sport, rivalries are just fun to watch. Michigan vs. Michigan State. USC
vs. UCLA. Florida vs. Florida State. Alabama vs. Auburn. SVSU vs. Northwood
University. Baywood Lounge vs. Bruce's Bar. That's right, the two local
taverns have an incredible rivalry between them when it comes to golf. The
two watering holes, which are virtually just a few miles apart, put it all
on the line when they tee it up.
o
Speaking of Bruce's Bar . . . I think it is a toss-up to who has more golf
towels adorning the walls - Jimmy Maxa's Bruce's Bar or Scott Stoney's
Intermission Deli. Both proprietors are passionate about the game of golf,
but Jimmy has some neat golf paraphernalia in his beer garden.
o
Portland Trail Balzers center Dale Davis must be physic. He came up with an
idea about a movie about a highly respected NBA star whose life is turned
upside down after a woman accuses him of rape. The independent film
completed shooting in February - months before Kobe Bryant's real-life
headache. The movie is titled "Playas Ball," which refers to the party held
during NBA All-Star week. Actor Allen Payne plays Cedric Tinsley, a
27-year-old NBA superstar who is the subject of a paternity suit by a woman
who threatens to accuse him of rape if he doesn't agree to an out-of-court
settlement.
o
With the New York Yankees signing all-star third sacker Aaron Boone, it
looks as if the days are numbered for Drew Henson. The former University of
Michigan signal caller may be headed for the National Football League after
all. And everybody laughed when Houston drafted Henson in the middle rounds.
o
If this isn't your favorite time of the year you are not a true local
sports fan. I am referring to prep football. Sure, each team has their
"followers." But I am always interested in seeing whom the next Blue
Chipper is that will be coming out of the Tri-Cities.
o
Speaking of high school football, I wish one of the local radio stations
would begin broadcasting key games again. Stations WSGW and WSAM and even
WMAX (before they turned religious) aired weekly games. However, it is the
same old bugaboo. Stations need to turn a buck by selling advertising to
make it worth their while. Otherwise, it would be a waste of their time.
o
Whatever happened to Chris Pittaro?
