17th Annual Review Music Awards PROGRAM & ITINERARY By Robert E. Martin Editor & Publisher It is hard for me to fathom that 17 years have passed since the first Review Music Awards Ceremony was held at the Fordney Lounge back in 1987. Obviously, a lot of changes have occurred in that time span. Some of our friends and talented musicians in the area have gone on to achieve national, regional, and international acclaim; others, sadly, are no longer with us. But despite the beating metronome of time, regardless of the changing fashion of hairstyle and taste, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to honoring the many talented voices, musicians, groups, and individuals that truly define the sound of our time and enrich our area with their talent and accomplishment. Because of that fact, I am very proud of this event. A noted musician and philosopher once said that in music one must think with the heart and feel with the brain. But in reality, without music life would be a big mistake. It nourishes us in ways that food cannot, it inspires us in directions that words fall short of, and ultimately, it draws the disparate seams in the fabric of our community together. It isn't an easy task, conducting elaborate nominating procedures, tabulating ballots, locating musicians, sending out invitations; but then nothing worthwhile ever is easy. The Awards Ceremony connects people, audience, and artist together. True, as in any contest, popularity factors enter into the mix; but I can assure you that painstaking effort is expended to assure that all ballots are properly counted and that all rules of fairness are followed. And in the final analysis, every musician nominated by their fans, friends, and colleagues is a winner, for how can there truly be a 'loser' when it comes to the gifted pursuit of creativity. If you've never attended an Awards Banquet before, we encourage you to arrive early. The 17th Review Music Awards Ceremony & Celebration will take place this Monday, May 12th, at Captain's Cove (formerly Hollywood Nights), 108 N. Niagara in Old Town Saginaw. Parking is available on the upper deck at the corner of Court & Hamilton and all along the venue. Doors open at 5:00 PM and seating is arranged on a first come-first serve basis. An excellent Chicken & Beef Dinner with all the fixings will be served from 5:00 - 9:30 PM. To expedite traffic, one line will be set up for nominees & advance ticket holders and a second line for people still needing to purchase tickets. If you are a nominated musician, remember to bring your invitation, as no duplicates will be issued. Advance tickets are available for $15.00 at Review Magazine and Captain's Cove. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for only $20.00. If you have questions, please phone us at 799-6078. Until then, we'll see you Monday evening! It has been an honor to produce this event for the past 17 years and I am certain this year will be one of our 'best' Awards Banquets yet.
