Time Out With Tany
by Jack Tany
THIS COLUMN WAS WRITTEN IN FRONT A LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE
QUICK QUIZ:
Who is the Big Ten's all-time career scoring leader in basketball?
A. Calbert Cheaney
B. Shawn Respert
C. Glen Rice
D. Mike Donahue
ON THE MONEY:
Craig Nettles, after Eric Show, a member of the John Birch Society, gave up
Pete Rose's record-breaking hit, "The Birch Society is going to expel him
for making a Red famous."
Jack LaLanne, physical fitness tycoon, on why he doesn't intend to die,
"It would wreck my image. I can't even afford to have a fat dog."

Golfer Nick Faldo, "In a major championship, you don't care about the
money. You're just trying to get your name on a piece of silver."
Come on, admit it. You are getting sick of hearing the words 'Diaper
Dandy.' Add 'He's a PTer (Prime-Timer)' to the list as well.

RANDOM THOUGHTS:
Hockey referee Kerry Fraser is as tough as they come. One time during a
playoff game between the St. Louis Blues and the Calgary Flames, a
policeman grabbed him between periods and told him to he had better change
his last call or he was going to shoot him. Fraser, in no uncertain terms,
told the cop that he had better be a good shot, because he's a small target
and pretty quick. * * *
I used to watch the Jack LaLanne fitness program when I was a kid. I was
always in awe of LaLanne, who still seems fit as a fiddle at the age of 88.
His secret to longevity? It's his daily routine. He wakes at 5 a.m., lifts
weights and swims for two hours. Breakfast is soy milk mixed with 50 grams
of protein powder, while lunch consists of four egg whites and six raw
vegetables. For supper, it's fish - salmon is his favorite - 10 raw
vegetables and a couple of glasses of wine. That's fine and dandy, but
where do the Dr. Pepper and Fritos come in?

I see where St. Vincent-St. Mary officials plan to retire LeBron James' No.
23 jersey. He will be presented with his framed Fighting Irish jersey by
senior teammates during a postgame ceremony by senior teammates following
the school's regular season finale. The jersey will be mounted in the
school's gymnasium after James graduates in June. I wonder what his agent
is going to give him? * * *
People from the Saginaw-area who personally know Steve Jaksa, have already
formed their own opinion. They know that the former Nouvel Catholic Central
baseball coach is the perfect man for the job. Jaksa has been named the
interim head coach at Central Michigan University when head coach Judd
Folske resigned after announcing that he would retire from CMU after the
2002-03 school year. The Chippewas will conduct a search for a head coach
and Jaksa has applied for the job. He was 327-99-9 in 11 seasons at Nouvel,
along with winning a pair of state titles. He spent on season as head coach
at Northwood University before taking the Central assistant coach's job.

The next time you go to Valley Golf Arena on Schust to swing a few clubs,
pick up owner Steve Fontaine's 9-page booklet called 'The Best In Golf.'
I understand most of it except for 'Position Pressure', since I've never
had it and never will. * * *
One of the greatest traditions of the area is the Golden Helmet Award,
which is presented to the top prep football player in Bay County by the
Coca-Cola Bottling Co. I was looking at the list of high school gridders
since the award was first presented in 1965. It is mighty impressive. Just
to name a few: Dennis Wigowski of Bay City Central (1965), Mark Elzinga of
Bay City Handy (1971), Dan and Dave Goetz of Bay City Western (1987) and
Bryce Sturtz of Bangor John Glenn (1989). The only two-time winner was Pat
O'Shea of Bay City Handy who won the prestigious honor in 1973 and 1974.
