Time Out With Tany by Jack Tany THIS COLUMN WAS WRITTEN IN FRONT A LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE QUICK QUIZ What college did Detroit Lions tight end Mikhael Ricks attend? A. University of Miami B. University of Texas C. Stephen F. Austin D. Disco Tech QUOTABLE QUOTES Ben Crenshaw on fellow golfer Seve Ballesteros, "Seve is a genius, one of the few true geniuses in the game. The thing is, Seve is never in trouble. He's in the trees quite a lot, but that's not trouble for him. That's normal." Jim Cadile, after switching from center to guard after 11 years in the National Football League, "It's like saving up all your life to move out of a grubby tenement and then finding out you've moved next door." Writer John Steinbeck, "It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming." IDLE THOUGHTS Bobble head dolls have made a resurgence in the last couple of years. The bobble heads, once a collectors' craze in the late 1950s and early '60s, were recently resurrected by McDonald's Restaurant. In the New York area McDonald's promoted the heck out of two popular baseball players, Roger Clemens and Mike Piazza - natural born enemies. Well, a similar promotion in Illinois went south when 100,000 bobble head versions of Brian Urlacher and Anthony Thomas of the Chicago Bears had to be recalled after finding excessive levels of lead in the paint. You want to talk about going to the well one too many times? Well, remember Randy Smith, fired last April as general manager of the Detroit Tigers? Smith has agreed to return to the San Diego Padres as a consultant to GM Kevin Towers. Smith was the Padres GM before Towers. After coming to the Tigers he made nine trades with his old team. Bobby Williams made out pretty well when he was unceremoniously fired from Michigan State University. Williams coached the Spartans to a 16-17 overall record, including a 2-0 record in bowl games and 1-2 against rival-Michigan. The ousted Spartan coach received a whopping $550,000 in a termination agreement with MSU. The Detroit Lions then hired him as an assistant coach. Many are saying he was hired to help with the drafting/signing/mentoring of Charles Rogers. Where would the Detroit Lions be now if they had drafted Michigan's Brian Griese instead of Eastern Michigan University's Charlie Batch? A part of me recently died when I heard that the Lindell AC closed. America's first sports bar made its reputation back when athletes went out after games with one another and not their agents. Owner John Butsicaris spent 52 years behind the bar and hasn't taken a vacation for the last six of them, ever since his brother Jimmy died. The Lindell, filled with sports memorabilia from Detroit sports teams (including Wayne Walker's jock strap), featured some of the best burgers in the business. Whatever happened to Herb Orvis? QUICK QUIZ ANSWER C. Mikhael Ricks attended Stephen F. Austin.
