LEN & GERRYS Bring Fresh Ideas to the Art of Fun & Food By Robert Mastroianni The impressive addition of Len & Gerry's to the State Street mix was made possible by the men behind it:(left to right) Mark Grasso, Lenny LeFevre, Leonard LeFevre, and George Pappas.)If you are looking for delicious food at exceptionally reasonable prices while pursuing the relaxation of a good time, look no further than Len & Gerry's at 6220 State Street between Midland and Wieneke roads. Located adjacent and connected to LeFevre's Family Bowl, the exquisitely constructed facility is naturally lit and the latest contribution to our community by entrepreneurs Leonard LeFevre and his son Lenny, along with significant contributions and insights offered by George Pappas. When the establishment opened the idea was to offer a nice neighborhood pub as opposed to a simple 'sports bar'. The specialty on the menu is coconut curry chicken wings, a unique recipe that belongs to bar manager Mark Grasso, who has 21 years experience as a chef. "It is kind of like a Caribbean-style wing," Grasso explains. "It's not found anywhere else in this area." Although Len & Gerry's has a full menu with everything from hamburgers to steak sandwiches to shrimp, Grasso says there will be two new additions to the menu: a half-pound hamburger and a 5-oz. Filet steak sandwich. "Both are going to be huge sandwiches," he notes. Fans of karaoke can enjoy 'Searching for a Star' with Bill Humes for every Wednesday evening's Ladies League. "The women will fill the place up for karaoke and they get done before the men's league does," Grasso said. "Once the men's league finishes, the place is full of a bunch of women singing. Everybody sticks around and it's a lot of fun." Many talented people try their hand at karaoke; some with exceptional voices. "We had a man from the area named Nort who sounded just like Marvin Gaye when he sang 'Let's Get It On'. Everyone loved his singing and he was the best singer I ever heard doing karaoke," comments Mark. Grasso said what makes karaoke fun is that it turns many shy people into singers. "Once shy people get on stage and start singing they tend to have a blast." Len & Gerry's also offer the latest technology in jukebox entertainment. "As far as I know, we are the only bar in Saginaw that as an Internet jukebox," adds Grasso. "This gives us access to tons of different types of music, so we have everyone's tastes in music covered and can truly offer something for everyone." Patrons can also enjoy computer golf in a different way than is afforded at other establishments. "We have our computerized golf games hooked up to a telephone line and people can play tournaments on the Internet with other people all over the country," he said. According to Grasso, another distinguishing factor that sets Len & Gerry's apart is that they offer Foster's beer on tap. "It's a really fine beer and it's not that much different than the kind of pilsner and lager that most people drink," he notes. "However, most other bars just don't seem to want to carry it. The distributors gave us boomerangs for tap handles which I thought was really cool." Drink specials for each night of the week were designed specifically for that particular night. "I tried to tailor the specials for each league night," relates Grasso. "I actually talked to the people in each league and found out what each wanted." The bar, which is attached to the 40-lane bowling alley, opened the day before last Thanksgiving and has a wide variety of league specials to satisfy any age group. "We just finished a Spongebob Squarepants mixed doubles league for parents and kids. That was a lot of fun." Every Saturday Len & Gerry's has a La Raza Unida league which is Spanish for the 'race united.' "They are a great group of people and I love having them bowl here," comments Grasso. "They take up to 20 lanes themselves." On March 4th a Mardi Gras Party will be featured which Grasso has renamed the 'Mardi Grasso' party. "We used to call it that when I ran a bar in Ann Arbor," he notes, "and I liked the name so decided to bring it up here." Grasso also plans to have New Orleans jazz and Brazilian music, decorate with feathers and beads, and have a huge food spread for the party, including jambalaya, gumbo and the coconut wings. By summer Len & Gerry's will be adding pizza ovens. "Whatever people like that's what I want to do," he concludes. For something entirely fresh and out of the ordinary, be sure to check out Len & Gerry's if you haven't had the pleasure to yet frequent this fine new addition to the tri-city entertainment community.
