THIS COLUMN WAS WRITTEN IN FRONT OF A LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE
QUICK QUIZ
Name the career-rushing leader for Saginaw Valley State University.
A. Kevin Mitchell

B. Brett Mullins

C. John Waters

D. Dr. Eric Gilbertson
QUOTABLE QUOTES
Vic Braden, tennis instructor, claiming tennis is an easy game, "My theory

is that if you buy an ice cream cone and make it hit your mouth, you can

play. If you stick it on your forehead, your chances are less."

					o

Former Major Leaguer Steve Boros, "You know your team's not in the race

when guys are growing beards for the duck hunting season."

					o

Golfer Arnold Palmer, "Golf takes more mental energy, more concentration,

more determination than any other sport ever invented."
IDLE THOUGHTS
When it comes to football, Tom Lemming is one of the top-recruiting

analysts. Lemming, editor and publisher of the Prep Football Report, calls

Saginaw High's Lamar Woodley one of the best prospects in the state since

T.J. Duckett and Charles Rogers. Lemming calls Woodley, a 6-2, 250 pound

linebacker, one of the top three players in the Midwest.

					o

The guest speaker for Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame's inaugural

induction banquet is none other than Marshall Thomas, the head basketball

coach at Saginaw High. Thomas is one of the classiest gentlemen I've ever

met. The banquet will be held Saturday, October 26 at Saginaw Valley State

University's Curtiss Hall.

					o

Jack Buck was one of the most-loved baseball broadcasters in the nation.

His recent death affected people throughout the nation - not just in St.

Louis where he was based. I heard a story the other day that Buck once

tipped workers at a car wash $100 each. There were a total of 25 workers at

the car wash at the time.

					o

Okay, you can go ahead and rename the event Tour de Lance. Lance Armstrong

recently won his fourth straight Tour de France title by completing the

2,032-mile course in 82 hours, five minutes and 12 seconds. Spain's Joseba

Beloki was more than seven minutes behind Armstrong. He took control of the

race exactly when everybody expected he would (heading up the murderous

hill). Armstrong, 30, is six years removed from the day doctors told him he

had a 4 in 10 chance of outlasting the cancer that was spreading through

his body.

					o

Are you ready for some Tiger Woods' stats? Woods is 6-2, 180 pounds and has

a 28-inch waist. He has 20-15 vision and his clubhead speed has been timed

at 125 miles-per-hour. The average for pros is 105-110. During his swing,

his hips turn 30 degrees and his shoulders turn 90 degrees. His shoes are

always black because any other color distracts him while putting. I wonder

how much the Nike swoosh weighs? His killer shot is called the 'stinger',

which no other golfer can replicate. It's a screaming, low-trajectory

2-iron that carries up to 260 yards in the air - which is nearly as far as

most pros hit their drivers. The stinger was invented by Ben Hogan, who

taught it to Claude Harmon, the 1948 Masters champion, who taught it to his

son, Butch Harmon, who has been Tiger's coach since he was 17.

					o

Baseball freaks should check out www.askmisterbaseball.com. The web site

claims to have the career stats for everyone who ever played professional

baseball.

					o

Dick Garber, the owner of the Saginaw Spirit hockey team, recently hired

WSGW's Cameron Knowles as director of public and community relations. It's

a great move for Garber because Knowles was one of the radio station's more

popular talk show hosts. People have been asking him if there's any

possibility about doing both jobs, but Knowles vows that the hockey gig

will keep him plenty busy.

					o

I was recently in a golf outing and was pared with former Major League

baseball player Al Luplow. I could listen to the Zilwaukee native forever

because he has a ton of interesting and humorous stories from his

seven-year career. Known for his aggressiveness while roaming the outfield,

I'm here to tell you Luplow is just as aggressive while golfing.

					o

Whatever happened to Mickey Zofko?
