The Review Magazine Time Out With Tany QUICK QUIZ Who is the only American in the last 50 years to hold the world's record for the mile run? A. Jim Ryun B. Steve Prefontaine C. Frank Shorter D. Craig Douglas QUOTABLE QUOTES Dave Magley, Cleveland Cavaliers forward, who received a $1,000 check after his hotel room was burglarized, "I should have told them about the color TV and the Steinway piano I always carry." Golfing legend Ben Hogan, "I have always thought of golf as the best of all games - the most interesting, the most demanding, the most rewarding." Tug McGraw, former Major League relief pitcher, "I met my wife in a New York bar. We had a lot in common. We were both from California and we were both drunk." IDLE THOUGHTS Some are calling the 2001-2002 Detroit Red Wings the best team of all time. I know the Edmonton Oilers put some extremely talented teams on the frozen surface years ago but who can dispute what the Wings have done this season. They had 11 Olympians and seven medalists, the Presidents' Trophy, nine potential Hall of Famers as well as a Hall of Fame coach. Oh yeah, and Lord Stanley's Cup returned to its rightful place, Hockeytown. I see where the WNBA is threatening to go on strike. Do you really think anybody would really know if they did strike? Or care for that mater? That's about as credible as O.J. Simpson chipping in the dark with his 3-wood. Joe Vogl is retiring as golf coach at Saginaw Valley State University. Joe, the head of operations for SVSU's Jack Ryder Center, has a unique voice mail message. At the end of his message, he simply states, "And remember, if you can't putt, you can't play." I'm not sure what's in the water in Thomas Township but it seems Tom Kennelly, the highly successful softball coach at Swan Valley High School, is in the hunt for a state crown each and every year. It all begins with pitching and the Vikings have had a barrel full of great hurlers over the years . . . Kim Dennison, Amber Anderson, Amy Gustin and Stacey Kennelly to just name a few. This year's standout winger, Ashley Mohr, may wind up to be the best of the best. I really think the National Basketball Association needs to do something to stop high schoolers from skipping college and heading right into the NBA. Maybe it's a mandatory age limit . . . or requiring a college player to complete at least his junior year of eligibility. Remember the 'hardship clause' that the NBA used in the 1970s? Not everyone is a hardship case. I wish him all the luck in the world but I really had hoped Marcus Taylor would stay at Michigan State University. Taylor, who led the Big Ten in scoring and assists in league games last season, had been projected as a second-round pick by draft analysts. I think staying one more season would make him a first rounder. He reminds me a little bit of former University of Michigan guard Eric Turner. Hats off to Saginaw's Jason Richardson. After turning in a superb rookie season in the NBA he's come home this summer. He's doing all the right things like giving back to the community. He made an appearance at Saginaw's Habitat for Humanity building blitz. Great stuff. Why does the Saginaw News continue to call Kenyon Martin a Saginaw native? I know his father was originally from Saginaw but I doubt he's spent much time here at all. The same goes for the tennis-playing Williams' sisters, Serena and Venus. They spent very little time here and certainly are not natives. If they were, city fathers would be begging them to come back and donate money to spruce up and build more tennis courts throughout the city. Whatever happened to Stu Irving? QUICK QUIZ ANSWER A. Jim Ryun, who held the record from 1966-1975. |
