Time Out With Tany

QUICK QUIZ
Who has the most lifetime home runs of all the players who never led their

league in home runs?
A. Stan Musial

B. Mel Ott

C. Ernie Banks

D. Tom Duclos

QUOTABLE QUOTES
Lee Trevino, on playing on four different golf courses in the Bob Hope

tournament, "The only problem is that it's hell to find your way home

every night."
o
Comedian Milton Berle, at a dinner honoring Howard Cosell, "Why are we

honoring this man? Did we run out of human beings?"
o
Female jockey Diane Crump, "A horse doesn't know whether the rider on his

back wears a dress or pants away from the track."
IDLE THOUGHTS
Green Bay Packers' quarterback Brett Favre has come under fire for

allegedly letting New York Giants' defensive end Michael Strahan sack him

so that Strahan could set the NFL record with 22 1/2 sacks.

Favre, who changed the play he called in the huddle, is one of the league's

most fiery players. But after the play he actually congratulated Strahan.

How would you feel if you were a Packer offensive lineman? They get paid to

not allow sacks and here's your quarterback falling down so an opponent can

obtain a record. I'd put an asterisk after Strahan's name in the record

book . . . or give Favre an assist.

I watched The Chair last Tuesday evening on ABC. I wish host John McEnroe

was strapped to the chair - an electric chair! I figure Tatum O'Neal must

have taken McEnroe to the cleaners as a result of their divorce, and he now

needs the money.

Hidden Oaks in St. Louis will host the Michigan Association of Lefthanded

Golfers annual state tournament August 24-25. For more information on this

unique tourney for southpaws, contact Bob Wolf at michiganlefties@yahoo.com.
o
As long as I'm talking about golf, I see where the purse for this summer's

2002 Buick Open will be a record $3.3 million, up $200,000 from last year's

total. Hopefully, this will help attract more top players to Warrick Hills.
o
I see where Sergei Fedorov's father, Viktor Fedorov, recently blasted

Detroit Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman for reducing the younger Fedorov's

playing time and by placing him on the blue line.

He said that Bowman is hurting his son so he suggested Sergei should leave

the team when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season.

Only one problem.

Fedorov doesn't become an unrestricted free agent until after next season.

He currently has a six-year, $38 million contract.

The New York Times has gone through its photo archives and is publishing

some of its best sports photos. They are reprinting the photos so sports

lovers can purchase black-and-white silver-gelatin matte prints from the

archives. It's a little expensive ($195 for an 11 x 14 and $375 for a 16 x

20, but there are some great photos of New York-based athletes such as Joe

DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig. To browse the entire

selection of images which are offered, visit nytimes.com/nystore.
o
I recently read a story about Ely Callaway (1919-2001). I found out that

the Big Bertha driver, which was introduced in 1991, was named after the

World War I cannon. That was followed by an even larger model (Great Big

Bertha) and soon by an even larger war club (Biggest Big Bertha).

I actually thought that he named the club after his wife. Callaway, who

made a bundle in the textile business before retiring to California where

he became an award-winning winemaker, got into the business more or less on

a whim. He bought a little California company that specialized in

reproductions of old-fashioned hickory-shafted clubs. After some

experimentation, the rest - as they say - is history.
