Time Out With Tany

by Jack Tany
QUICK QUIZ
Who holds the Michigan State University

Men's basketball record for most points in a career?
A. Scott Skiles

B. Shawn Respert

C. Terry Furlow

D. Reed Phillips

QUOTABLE QUOTES
Former linebacker D.D. Lewis, "Franco Harris faked me out so bad one time

that I got a 15-yard penalty for grabbing my own face mask."

Jerome Whitehead, former Marquette basketball player, after a Brazilian

tour, "It's an unbelievable situation when 25,000 people are booing you and

throwing garbage at you. It's like the whole country was Notre Dame."

Tommy Lasorda, former Los Angeles Dodgers manager, "They talk about Stan

Musial being a great guy. What I want to know is, who wouldn't be a great

guy with over 3,600 hits? Show me a .200 hitter who's a great guy. That's

what I want to see."
IDLE THOUGHTS
I wish people would cut Nate Newton some slack. About a month ago he was

caught with 213 pounds of wacky weed. Just recently, Newton was again

caught by the law - with 175 pounds of hemp. At least he's trying to cut

back.

The national media has been nailing George O'Leary to the proverbial cross

after he resigned his head coaching position at Notre Dame after admitting

he falsified his academic and athletic credentials for decades. O'Liar, er,

make that O'Leary, embarrassed and stunned the nation's most storied

program by claiming to have a master's degree in education and to have

played college football for three year. Both of those statements proved to

be false and he was forced to resign after just five days on the job.

O'Leary will probably never coach again in college football. His only hope

would be if an old buddy coaching in the NFL give him a position as an

assistant coach.

Ron Morelli, who owns the Tuffy Auto Service Center on Dixie Highway in

Monroe, is a business owner with a sense of humor. Morelli placed the

following sign on his marquee in front of his shop: "Give Us A Chance. We

Could Probably Fix The Lions." With all the injuries the Lions have

suffered this season, I bet General Manager Matt Millen wished a few of his

players had ball joints.

Did you see where North Texas got into the college bowl picture with a

losing record? North Texas played in the New Orleans Bowl with a 5-6

record. Come on now, 5-6? Heck, I would have sent Farmington Hills Harrison

to the game instead of North Texas.

You're not a true college football fan unless you watch the legendary

Army/Navy game on television. Where else can you find two teams that bang

heads all game long and then stand side-by-side after the game to sing each

other's fight song?

Not too many people enjoy early season college basketball games. That's

where major powers load up their schedule with nobodies to bulk up their

record for league play. One of Michigan State University's initial

match-ups was against the University of Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne. No

college team should have more than two names.

I love it when people predict how much money is bet on the Super Bowl. I

don't think their figures even scratch the surface. There are so many

different football boards floating around that I would divide the number by

20 to get a more reasonable number.

You can't remake a classic! I don't know why Hollywood even tries? Their

recent debacle was the remake of Brian's Song, the 1971 tear-jerker

starring Billy Dee Williams as Chicaco Bears running back Gale Sayers, and

James Caan as Brian Piccolo. If you don't tear up during the dramatic

deathbed scene of the original movie, you're not a true sports fan. The

made-for-TV movie? It sucked.

Whatever happened to Dick Drago?
QUICK QUIZ ANSWER
B. Shawn Respert with 2,531 points. Respert played for the Spartans from

1990-95.
