Time Out With Tany by Jack Tany QUICK QUIZ Who was the last National Hockey League position player to play an entire season without picking up a minor penalty? A. Craig Ramsey B. Pierre Turgeon C. Wayne Gretzky D. Mike Selk QUOTABLE QUOTES Duffy Daugherty, former Michigan State University football coach, on the type of player he prefers, "We like them big at Michigan State. But we'll settle for players with three kinds of bones - a funny bone, a wishbone and a backbone. The funny bone is to enjoy a laugh, even at one's own expense. The wishbone is to think big, set one's goals high and to have dreams and ambitions. And the backbone - well, that's what a boy needs to get up and go to work and make all those dreams come true." o Richard Petty, on refusing to drive at Indy, "A man must want money awful bad to drive there." o Professional golfer Jim Thorpe, "Guys in other sports, everything is taken care of for them. You could play a whole career in the NFL or NBA and still be a baby. To stay out here, you have to be an adult." IDLE THOUGHTS With high school basketball just around the corner, I thought I'd let you know who holds the state record for most free throws in a game. It's none other than TV-5's own Terry Camp. Camp, playing for Ubly High School, canned 25 free throws in 27 attempts against Reese on December 12, 1980. o I see where Dennis Rodman wants to branch out into the restaurant business. Rodman, who has had several run-ins with the law over his raucous behavior, is in negotiations to buy a majority stake in Sloppy Joe's restaurant, bar and night club in Irvine, Calif. If the deal goes through, the restaurant probably would be renamed Rodman's Roadhouse. He would transform Sloppy Joe's into a trendy establishment featuring live entertainment with rock concerts, costume parties and an area for tattooing and piercing. Rodman already owns Josh Slocum's, a popular restaurant and nightspot that has drawn criticism for customers' rowdy behavior. I hope he washes his hands prior to serving food. o Nate Newton played 14 seasons in the National Football League, including 13 with the Dallas Cowboys. The six-time Pro Bowler who owns three Super Bowl rings, is in his first year out of football after retiring last year. So what does he do to keep busy? He gets busted for allegedly possessing 213 pounds of marijuana. Two hundred and thirteen pounds! That's like four hay bales isn't it? Maybe he was delivering them to former teammate Michael Irvin. o My toughest job so far as a father of two boys (ages 7 and 3)? Explaining to them why I hate the New York Yankees. I start explaining about the Pinstrippers dynasty and owner George Steinbrenner buying a pennant because of his open checkbook, and then I look at our own Mike Ilitch. Isn't he doing the same thing when he picked up the Dominator, Luc and Brett over the summer? o I see where Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf just had a baby boy. This little dude is probably doomed from the start because people will be expecting a future Grand Slam champion. I hope he goes into badminton instead. o People still say that Tim McCarver is the worst 'color man' in baseball. I admit he does babble about insignificant things at times, but he is very knowledgeable of the game. He was a very hard-nosed player while he was in the major leagues. o How would you like to have attended Dunlap High School in Dunlap, Ill.? Recently 10 students - all of them football players - were hooked up to a polygraph machine to determine whether the teens violated Dunlap's code of conduct by attending a party where alcohol was consumed. Seven of 10 students submitted to a lie detector exam and flunked the questioning. They were then barred from competing in the first round of the state playoffs. The investigation began after police broke up a party in early October. Nobody was arrested, but officer took down the names of everyone present and traced the registration of all cars parked there. Their list of 15 athletes was turned over to school officials. Only three students admitted guilt when confronted. A number of others claimed they had left the party as soon as they realized alcohol was present. Two students were suspended from the team after refusing to take the test, and seven more were suspended after flunking. Three students were cleared who otherwise might have been punished. I'm not condoning drinking by high school students but a lie detector? Isn't this a little extreme? o Now that was an exciting World Series! Most of baseball's post season is pretty non-eventful stuff, but Arizona's seventh-game victory over New York in their final at-bat was historic. I'm glad Luis Gonzalez is getting a World Series ring. He's one of a few ex-Detroit Tigers who has gone on to actually do something. Another ex-Bengal, Danny Bautista, played for the Diamondbacks and had a solid series. o Whatever happened to Jim Plunkett? QUICK QUIZ ANSWER A. Craig Ramsey was the last NHL position player to go through the entire season (78 games) without committing a minor penalty.
