by Jack Tany

QUICK QUIZ
Who was the first president of the United States to attend a Monday Night

Football Game?
A. Richard Nixon

B. Jimmy Carter

C. Ronald Reagan

D. Gary Loster

QUOTABLE QUOTES
Lee Trevino, on why he joined the Senior Tour, "Why should I play against

those flat bellied when I can play against these round bellies?"

Ginny Goco, gymnastics coach, on what a female gymnast should look like,

"You want all the curves in the right places, but not at the level Hugh

Hefner might want for the Playboy image. Voluptuous girls don't win in

gymnastics. You want lean, strong girls, the racehorse type."

Wayne Walker, former Detroit Lions' linebacker, on his baldness, "Somewhere

in Detroit there's a helmet with all my hair in it."
IDLE THOUGHTS
Need a sports fix prior to the weekend college and professional football

games? Tune into Inside Schwartz Thursday evenings on NBC (8:30 p.m.

Eastern time). The new sitcom deals with a young man trying to break into

the sports broadcasting business. The first show of the season featured

cameos by Dick Butkus, Bill Walton, Bill Buckner, Mills Lane and

sportscasters Van Earl Wright and Kevin Frazier. Better tune in soon

because I don't think the show will be around too long.

Bad Boys, Bad Boys . . . to check out the latest police log on professional

athletes, check out www.badjocks.com. This site, which bills itself as "the

Drudge report of sports," details the number of pro jocks who have been

suspended, arrested, convicted and acquitted. Because of the colorful

language, this site isn't intended for kids.

I was driving down Michigan Ave. on Saginaw's west side the other day and I

was behind a rather large Chevy pick-up truck. In the back window of the

truck was a sticker with "FAG" spelled out. The "FAG" stood for Fans

Against Gordon, as in Jeff Gordon. It should be noted that the rather-large

gentleman who was driving the truck also had an extremely large number "3"

in the back window of the truck, a la Dale.

People have asked me what I thought of Ashley Martin, the first woman to

play in a major college football game. Haven't heard of Martin? She plays

for Jacksonville State University and kicked an extra point through the

uprights with 8 minutes and 31 seconds remaining in the first quarter

against Cumberland University to become the first woman to play and score

in a National Collegiate Athletic Association football game. Martin, the

second string kicker, booted three PATs in the contest as her team went on

to win, 72-10. She was recruited for the team by head coach Jack Crowe,

who, from his office window, saw her kick footballs after soccer practice

(for which she was originally recruited for). The rest is history. If she

is good enough to endure the rigors of practice, so be it. Who cares what

sex she is? She can probably kick a football longer than I can hit my sand

wedge.

Forget all the Geritol in the Gatorade jokes. Michael Jordan is back in the

National Basketball Association. Although he won't be the same MJ of old,

he is still better than 80 percent of the players in the league. I believe

this is a goodwill gesture by NBA chief David Stern who helped bring back

Goodwill Ambassador Michael to the league. Stern saw that the NBA was

turning into a thug league with tattoos aplenty. Jordan will help try to

bring respectability to the league.

Tradition has each member of the winning Stanley Cup hockey team allowed to

keep the Stanley Cup for one entire day. What did Colorado Avalanche coach

Bob Hartley do when he had the infamous cup? He took it fishing. Hartley

and friend Guy Larocque went fishing on the Ottawa River with the Stanley

Cup in their boat at 5:30 a.m. After the fishing trip Hartley took the Cup,

arguably professional sports' most storied trophy, to PPG Industries. PPG

is a windshield manufacturing facility where Hartley worked in the 1980s.
