TIME OUT WITH TANY
by Jack Tany

QUICK QUIZ

Name the sports figure who has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated the
most times.
A. Muhammad Ali
B. Earvin (Magic) Johnson
C. Michael Jordan
D. Dave (Tuck) Bedford

QUOTABLE QUOTES

Sports Columnist Jimmy Cannon,  "If Howard Cosell were a sport, he'd be a
roller derby."

o

Viktor Korchnoi, chess grand master, asked if he feared playing Russian
grand master Anatoly Karpov for the world championship in 1978,  "I fear
nobody but the dentist."

o

Pete Newell, former basketball great,  "When I was young, college
basketball was an extension of the college itself. Now it is a piece of
some television network."

IDLE THOUGHTS

Actor Charlie Sheen is into sports memorabilia big time. Or should I say he
was into it. After 11 years of serious collecting, he auctioned off the
wares. Some of the items he had included a business card from Shoeless Joe
Jackson's liquor store, a canceled $20 check signed by Ted Kluszewski, and
a package of Champ prophylactics featuring Ted William's unauthorized
image. He also had the ball Mookie Wilson grounded between Bill Buckner's
legs in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, the glove that missed it and the
cleats Buckner was wearing.

o

It's said that if a ref or ump can get through a game without being
noticed, he has done a good job. The same should apply to a parent.

o

Remember Juan Gonzalez? He's been married four times, all of which ended in
divorce.

o

Tommy Gioiosa, an old buddy of Pete Rose, accuses the former All-star of
gambling, dealing drugs and even corking his bat. My question is why is he
coming out with this garbage now? Where was Gioiosa years ago when the
media was first putting Rose through the proverbial ringer?

o

Brian Claar, David Frost and Calvin Peete are the only golfers to hit every
fairway during a 72-hole Tour event. Claar did it at the 1992 Memorial,
Frost in the '88 Tucson Open, and Peete at the Memorial in '86 and '87.

o

If I needed to choose one Major League ball player to deliver a hit, here
are my top three clutch hitters:
1. Ty Cobb
2. Rod Carew
3. Pete Rose

o

The Review Magazine is well represented on the newly formed Saginaw County
Sports Hall of Fame committee. Beside myself, fellow
journalist/photographer Dick Curry is on the board. It's quite an
undertaking to start something like this from scratch and Don Bethune,
president of the Hall of Fame, should be commended for getting the ball
rolling. The committee is planning to induct its first members in the fall
of 2002. Think it's an easy task? Take pen to paper and jot down 10 names
of belongs on the first ballot. Tough task isn't it?

o

Mike Piazza is one true Major Leaguer with class. He recently donated
$25,000 of bonus money to the families of the three firemen killed in the
line of duty. I know it's probably what he makes in a single at-bat, but he
didn't need to do it or seek out publicity for the gesture.

o

Whatever happened to Joe Sparma?

QUICK QUIZ ANSWER

C. Michael Jordan with 49. Boxing great Muhammad Ali is next in line with
38, followed by NBA scoring leader Kareem Abdul-Jabar with 28. Earvin
'Magic' Johnson has graced the cover of SI 25 times.
