Time Out
With Tany
By Jack Tany

QUICK QUIZ
Name the Detroit bar owner who was in the vehicle when Billy Martin was
killed in an automobile accident.
A. Bill Reedy
B. Sam Ragnone
C. Jimmy Foster
D. Jenna Bush
QUOTABLE QUOTES
Alvin Dark, former major league manager and born-again Christian, "The Lord
taught me to love everybody, but the last ones I learned to love were the
sportswriters."
Darrell Royal, former Texas football coach, "A head coach is guided by this
main objective: dig, claw, wheedle, and coax that fanatical effort out of
the players. You want them to play every Saturday as if they were planting
the flag on Iwo Jima."
Comedian Bob Hope, after hitting an errant tee shot at the Phoenix Open
Pro-Am, "I'd give up golf if I didn't have so many sweaters."
IDLE THOUGHTS
If you were the general manager of the Detroit Tigers, who would you keep
and who would you trade away. Pitifully, the only Bengal players I would
keep are Damion Easley, Rob Fick, Dean Palmer, Roger Cedeno, Bobby
Higginson, Randall Simon, Shane Halter, Jeff Weaver, Steve Sparks, Danny
Patterson and Matt Anderson. I would take Tony Clark but it seems as if he
sometimes only gives enough effort to get by. He took a called third strike
(which was outside) the other day and didn't say one word to the umpire.
Not too much fire in the belly.
I saw ole' 88, Charlie Sanders, roaming the sidelines at the Detroit Lions
Training Camp the other day. The seven-time Pro Bowler is now a scout for
the Lions. He looks as if he could still catch one over the middle.
I expect a big year out of Johnnie Morton. The West Coast offense should
fit the speedy receiver well.
I know there's five months left in the calendar year but I am ready to give
the Athlete of the Year award to Lance Armstrong. Who can blame me after
the former cancer survivor won his third straight Tour de France. He is a
truly amazing man.
Prediction: Phil Mickelson is the next golfer who will get the dreaded
'Majorö ' monkey off his back. The talented lefty is a master around the
greens but he's been suffering from the Sunday woes.
I would love to see Arizona's Luis Gonzalez catch and pass San Francisco's
Barry Bonds in the National League home run derby. Gonzalez, a former
Detroit Tiger, is hard not to like. Bonds, on the other hand, has an ego
bigger than San Francisco Bay. I doubt his father, Bobby Bonds, never acted
like a jerk while on the field.
I firmly believe Michael Jordan should stay retired. I know he's better
than 95 percent of the current NBA players, but he will always be a Chicaco
Bull in my book.
The NFL has banned bandannas. The football bosses believe the colorful rags
look too much like gang gear. Geez, I must be getting old. I remember when
they had a problem with Jim McMahon's headband.
I thought for sure Saginaw High's Anthony Roberson would head for Michigan
State University after completing his senior year. Roberson, a two-time
all-stater who is in line for the state's Mr. Basketball Award, has given a
verbal commitment to the University of Florida. Tom Izzo was at so many
Trojan games that I thought he was a season ticket holder. He's going to
make one heck of a point guard for coach Billy Donovan's Gators.
Whatever happened to Altie Taylor?
