Opportunity Awaits Budding Children’s Authors-The Michigan Elementary & Middle School Principal Association (MEMSPA), recently announced a contest for aspiring children authors-They will pick two winners each year to publish-a chapter book and a picture book, to reach children 3-14 years.  The published winners will be able to offer their books at on a website at www.mackinacisland.com.  Submissions should be sent to the MEMSPA office.  Each entry costs $40 for processing with additional entries per person at $25.  Entries must be sent with check or credit card to MEMSPA, 1980 N. College Road, Mason, MI 48854.  No email entries will be accepted, however entry forms are available at the MEMSPA website at http://www.memspa.org/pdf/MIBookAwardApp2009.pdf.  Entries can be submitted until August 31st. 2009.  Five finalists will be announced for each category, with one winner for each category receiving a contract to have their book published and released during Michigan Week in May the following year.

Thru May 3: Eugene Beckham: SCALE Models, Reptilian Illustrations-An exhibition of fifteen original ink and watercolor paintings by Midland artist Eugene Beckham, featuring during the exhibition “Lizards and Snakes: ALIVE!” at the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art, located at the Midland Center for the Arts.  Also featured will over 60 live lizards from five continents.  On view through May 3rd the exhibit introduces visitors to a diversity of squamates, the group that includes legged and legless lizards, including snakes.  The exhibit will showcase live animals and their remarkable adaptations, including projectile tongues, deadly venom, amazing camouflage, and sometimes surprising models of locomotion.
